During the initial site survey, we were deeply captivated by the urban and canal views outside the windows. However, upon observing the interior, it appeared considerably dim, and the existing finishes and architectural layout were not entirely satisfactory. The owners hope that the new house can embody a relaxed and comfortable lifestyle, and they prefer minimal alterations to the original mechanical and ceiling finishes. Yet, in terms of specific design techniques and concepts, they have provided us with ample room for contemplation. The female homeowner and the child dislike the retention of too much traditional Chinese furniture, while the male homeowner has a preference for Chinese-style decor. The daily lives of the male and female homeowners revolve around family activities, spending a considerable amount of time at home where almost all three meals are consumed. The male homeowner frequently entertains friends at home but does not prefer guests to stay overnight.
Our overall design focuses on reorganizing the internal and external spatial relationships of the house. Building upon addressing functional issues, we seek to balance the relationship between "light" and "heavy" through the application of form, materials, and color. We aim to create a modern, free space infused with a Chinese cultural core, balancing the expectations of each family member for their new home.
